Salvage Medical Association

Mission & values

What SMA exists to do.

A clear mission, a long-term vision and a short list of values that every programme is expected to honour.

Mission

Develop practical, evidence-informed frameworks that help improve medical preparedness and clinical governance in salvage operations.

Vision

A salvage industry in which medical arrangements are proportionate to operational risk, professionally supported and subject to continual improvement.

Values

Eight values. No exceptions.

These values are intended to guide standards development, consultancy, training and any future certification activity alike.

  • 01

    Safety.

The welfare of people comes before schedule, cost or convenience.

  • 02

    Clinical integrity.

Honest, ethical clinical practice — even when it is commercially inconvenient.

  • 03

    Evidence.

Positions grounded in published evidence and transparent expert consensus.

  • 04

    Professional competence.

Practitioners properly prepared for the environments they work in.

  • 05

    Independence.

Free of commercial ties to any single contractor, provider or insurer.

  • 06

    Collaboration.

Built with clinicians, operators, insurers and responders — not in isolation.

  • 07

    Transparency.

Open about methods, status, limitations and decision-making.

  • 08

    Continuous improvement.

Every document, exercise and operation is a chance to learn.

Organisation in development

SMA is at a formative stage. It is not a statutory regulator, a formally recognised international standards authority or an accredited certification body, and it is not endorsed by the IMO, ISO or any other organisation. The commitments described on these pages are intentions that will be formalised as governance arrangements are approved and published.
